Meet Octavius Rixton, a young Victorian gentleman who leads a double life as Octavius Fanks, detective. When a man is found dead of a morphine overdose in the village of Jarlchester, the jury decide upon a verdict of suicide. But Fanks isn't so sure. As he investigates he becomes increasingly suspicious of the French chemist's assistant Monsieur Joolees (known locally as Monsieur Judas). But soon, Fanks is soon forced to confront the possibility that the real culprit may lie closer to home...

Originally published in 1891, this whodunnit is the first to feature Fergus Hume's gentleman-detective, Octavius Fanks and is a must for fans of Victorian crime fiction.

A stranger stops at an inn in the town of Jarlchester. The next morning he is found dead of morphia (morphine) poisoning. An inquest is held and the coroner's jury reaches the verdict of death by suicide. A detective named Octavius Fanks, who is really a Victorian gentleman by the name of Octavius Rixton, suspects foul play and decides to look into the matter.

This novel is written in the rather ponderous prose of the time with many of the characters quoting from the classics in their everyday speech. That is, I suppose, to give the novel a bit of class. It is always fun to read these novels that actually were written in late 19th century to get a true feeling of the times. Brain fever seems to be an ailment that was prevalent in that era. At least in novels. Insanity was hereditary. If there was insanity in the family background, one only had to wait until the latent germs of insanity, passed down to a descendant, would spring forth in full bloom in a normally sane person and then the raving lunatic would have to be carted off to the asylum.

The characters in this novel are all one dimensional. The protagonists are pure in thought and deed and the antagonists are evil in every way. And, it is always easy for anyone to tell the antagonists by there shifty eyes and sickly smiles. The story moves along quite well as Fanks starts with a simple clue that brings him into re-acquaintance with old friends, and further signs which lead to several possible suspects. The trail of clues finally leads to the murderer who confesses all. Actually, there is no real proof up to that point. There are no clues that would enable the reader to solve the mystery, just the path that Fanks follows that finally leads to the murderer's confession.

Still, I found it to be fun read, taking enjoyment in the style of writing and seeing the mindsets of late 19th century individuals.

Monsieur Judas Black Heath Classic Crime edition by Fergus Hume Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Boring. I returned it.
Fergus Hume can spin incredibly varied mystery tales, but this one used personalities of a solidly repellant kind. None could rise to hero or heroine, all were intricately flawed. Story was complex and full of plot twists. Not one of my Hume favorites even though clever.
The story involves a gentleman Scotland Detective investigating the death of a stranger in a small remote village. The only clue is a box of pills found in the dead man's room. The title refers to the druggist (chemist's assistant) who filled the prescription, a foreigner who is "not English", in the Victorian sense. There are numerous red herrings as one person after another appears guilty by circumstantial evidence, including the detective's old school chum who just happened to be on a walking tour and spent the night in the room next to the dead man's.
I am deducting one star because the killer turned out to be someone who was not even a suspect. The book ends with a sudden Perry Mason style revelation.
I have read several books by Hume and found them all clever and enjoyable mysteries, though some were better than others. Recommended
